Question 1
- Natasha
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The poster is quite dark, featuring the old, damaged looking china doll with no eyes in front of a black backdrop. This is a trend observed in many horror posters, such as ‘Child’s Play’, ‘Annabelle’ and ‘Dead Silence.

The tagline is 'the voices will consume you'. This correlates to the titles used in the trailer, a feature seen to be heavily utilised when researching horror movie posters. It is located on the top, centre of the poster, supporting conventions posed by ‘Bride of Chucky, ‘Robert’ and ‘Dead Silence’. The tagline sets up the antagonist to be dangerous and relentless without revealing too much about them, therefore encouraging fear of the unknown and encouraging the potential audience to see the movie. The alteration of the size of the text reflects the conventions found in the movie poster for the film 'Insidious'.

The main title is presented on the bottom half of the poster, one of the most common places for titles to be positioned on horror movie posters as seen in the posters for ‘Dead silence’, ‘Annabelle’ ‘Bride of Chucky’ and ‘Dolls’. Despite the title not being massive, it occupies over half of the total width of the page, making it easily recognised as the main title. The reason it is not enormous is in order to avoid distraction from the rest of the page, in addition to avoiding a cluttered appearance.

The blur of the words shown behind the text in the poster's tagline and title reflect the ghostly image found in the movie poster for 'Dead Silence', with its text effect inspiring the typography in the poster for 'The Voices Within'. This was achieved by duplicating the text and locating it on a layer below the original, and then adding a motion blur. This effect was also added behind the doll figure.
The font used is the same font used in the trailer, a feature commonly used as discovered through the research of the posters for 'Insidious' and 'Annabelle'.

In the photograph of the doll, the colour is de-saturated, adhering to typical conventions of a horror movie poster, in addition to the subject being centred, a convention reinforced through its use in ‘Poltergeist’ and ‘Dead Silence’.

The colour scheme appears to be red, white and black. This connotes horror and follows the typical conventions of a horror movie poster.

This work was actually done personally by Natasha Falce or Chris Briant'. The production credits are shown on all film posters. A horse is shown beside the production credits, implying the production company logo, a feature which can be recognised in companies such as Universal Pictures' film posters. The age rating is positioned beside the production credits, challenging typical conventions of having it located at the bottom right hand side of the poster. The reasoning for this was that it balances the text in the centre as the production company logo for ‘Dark Horse Productions’ is located on the other side, making the poster more symmetrical and therefore more aesthetically pleasing.

The film website is crucial for the advertising process of any movie, allowing the audience to discover more about a film they may have seen advertised on social media websites or other places online, in addition to on busses or on television. The design of the website was influenced by other horror websites such as ‘The Woman in Black’ and ‘The Conjuring’, which influenced our film website to have a design which reflects the film’s iconography; this includes stills from the trailer or images from the poster being used as a background for the website. The overall house style of the site was black and white, reinforcing the dark tone of the movie as seen in the website for ‘The Conjuring’. In addition to this, the website has reviews and 5 star ratings plastered across the home page, clearly displaying positive reviews and therefore encouraging viewership of the movie, this is also seen in ‘The Conjuring’. Film websites often have 5 tabs, home, story, trailer, gallery and soundtrack, therefore this convention was adopted in our website.
